Sign Design – Is Time a Critical Factor?
Few customers come to us with a completed design in hand. Some first-time customers tell us, “I’m not sure what sign I need, but I need it in a hurry”! Others say, “I have a logo, I just need you to make a sign”. Those customers are in a hurry at first, as well. But a logo is only one of many ingredients necessary to produce a sign that meets our customers’ expectations. Some customers need temporary signage, and time is critical in meeting their needs. But most of our customers have long-term needs and the results will reflect the image of their business for years to come. For these customers, time is also critical. However, for these customers that means taking time to design the right sign and to design the sign right. To do these things well, we must take time to fully understand our customers’ needs.
Design the Right Sign
The ingredients for designing a sign are gathered in the first step of our 5-step process, Consultation. We need to know things like the purpose or objective, location, illumination, and size of the sign, among others. And one of the many questions we ask customers is do they have a branding guide. The next question is do they already have a digital vector art file of their logo or the graphics for the sign. When the answer to both questions is yes, some of the work may have already been completed. If the answer to either question is no, it is critical we do not rush the consultation step. Otherwise, an unnecessary burden will be placed on our designers to fill in the blanks, thereby dragging out the design step longer than necessary.
Design the Sign Right
Once our sales consultation staff have gathered the necessary ingredients for the sign, provided an estimate that meets our customer’s approval, and collected a deposit, our design staff goes to work. Using those ingredients, our designers draw on years of experience to design a sign that meets our customer’s needs and expectations. They may make further recommendations about placement, size, color, or materials. After a few iterations, a final design proof is approved by the customer. On a few occasions, the approved design may involve an adjustment to the final price of the sign, as indicated in our initial estimate.
